Though it is only June, here in South Carolina it feels like August. We have had several days of 100 degrees, so when it only gets to 80 something it feels cool.
When I was out shopping the other day I was surprised at the number of babies I saw who were not dressed for the weather. Newborns and very young babies cannot adapt easily to changes in temperature. While you want to dress baby in light weight cotton clothing for outdoors, remember to have a recieving blanket or something a bit warmer for when you go into a air conditioned building.
Also don't forget about using sunscreen to protect your baby's skin and a hat and sunglasses to protect the eyes. This is just one of the great styles of sunglasses designed just for little faces. All of our kids sunglasses are UV400.

I remember when my daughter was about 3 months old, my sister sent me a big box of fussy little girl dresses. Those were the days when gender was a guess until the day arrived. She had a beautiful red headed boy, so she sent me all the girlie baby gifts she had received. I was so delighted, and had so much fun dressing my daughter up to show her off.

From the moment your darling child is born, the growth and aging processes begins. In the early weeks, we enjoy just staring at our newborn baby whether awake or asleep. But soon sleep deprivation sets in and we anxiously look forward to when the baby will finally sleep through the night.
As our baby grows we encounter new delights and new anxieties. We anxiously anticipate the first words, the first real giggle, the first steps and so on. We tire of diapers and can't wait until potty training finally catches on.
But as any grandmother will tell you, enjoy and hold precious each stage. When you are 50 or so, you will wish each stage had lasted just a little longer. Watching your 'baby' head off to college or marry, is exciting, but you will miss watching those beautiful eyes drift off to sleep after a night of walking the floor.
As my father always said, "Don't wish your life away. Enjoy each day as it comes and tomorrow will come soon enough."
Enjoy each stage and step of your baby's life, even the difficult ones and you will be able to wave them good bye some day and feel sad but fulfilled.

The season is approaching for all my grandchildren to have birthdays. I could never figure out how they all had summer birthdays! And now I have a great niece and soon to be nephew to add to the list.
One of the things I have to consider in shopping is the cost of shipping. One year I was particularly short of funds and so the gifts I bought them were pretty small. But when I went to the post office I ended up spending more on shipping than I did on the gifts.

For me Mother's Day is the most special day of the year. I like Christmas, Thanksgiving and 4th of July, but none of them can beat Mother's Day. Even to this day I buy a bouquet of pink roses in memory of my own Mother. It's just a habit I can't break.
But what was so special were the hand drawn card and notes I got from my children. The creation of these masterpieces was undoubtably supervised by school teachers, sunday school teachers and at least once by my children's step mom. Each card I recieved found a place on the refridgerator or taped to the bookcase beside my desk.
I still get cards from my kids on Mother's day, but they don't tug at my heart quite as much as the "I love you" scrawled on construction paper. After a time my children wanted to buy me something for Mother's day. Since my husband was the supplier of cash for these gift giving occasions, I suggested coffee cups. Over the years I think I collected over 200 coffee mugs! I even had my husband mount a peg board on the kitchen wall to hang them from. I got a warm feeling every time I looked at them.

A couple of days ago, I told you all about the NamiWalk that I went on. Here is a photo of one of my brothers, my sister and myself as we set out on the walk. (I am the one in the wheelchair). The walk was attended by lots of families with babies and toddlers in strollers and dogs on leashes. Some folks decided to jog the 5k walk instead of taking it more slowly.
It was a beautiful day and a great reason for our family to get together. One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is your time. Find things to do together, whether it is a charity walk or just a day in the park. Your attention, your time, and your love are the best of baby gifts.

While this is a baby gift blog, I frequently feel obligated to address issues that are outside the realm of enjoying the personalized products from Kidoodles by Kim.
This weekend I participated in the 2008 NamiWalks in Columbia, SC. It is a great organization which I support as a participant in meetings and support groups. NAMI not only provides support to those with a mental illness but also to families and friends of the mentally ill. I invite you to investigate NAMI if you suffer from depression, anxiety or other diagnosis. If you are concerned with the lives of the mentally ill, I encourage you to contribute and participate in the NAMI group in your area.

I don't often get into recommending movies, but I really enjoyed watching 'Martian Child' this past week.
It stars John and Joan Cusack whom I frequently enjoy watching. A widowed man decides to follow through with his deceased wife's plan to adopt a child. As I watched the movie I was so moved by how real and vivid a child's imagination can be. In this case the little boy uses his imagination to protect himself from the trauma of abandonment by his natural parents.
Its a terrific film on parenting particularly if your child perplexingly brilliant. Rent it, watch it and let me know what you think about it!
