Birthdays and Holidays

My sister Susan was born on December 27th, 3 and 1/2 years before me. Of the four children in our family, she was the only one with a winter birthday. The rest of us had birthdays in July and August. Those were great birthdays, in the middle of the summer and were always the occasion of barbeques and other festivities. But, Susan frequently missed out by being 2 days after Christmas. While relatives sent us birthday cards and gifts, her's was sometimes forgotten or 'included' with her Christmas gift.

After one summer of proclaiming 'IT'S NOT FAIR!", my father officially swapped birthdays with Susan. He notified aunt's and uncles and cousins that Susan's new birthday was August 28!  From then on a barbeque was held to celebrate her birthday in the summer.

Do you have a child on your list that has a birthday around the holidays? With all the celebrations surrounding Christmas and the New Year, a late December birthday can be easy to skip over. But the child does not forget, and it hurts to be forgotten. So be sure to check your birthday list and don't forget to send off that winter birthday child's gift.
