My Daughter's First Christmas

BC001_LARGE.gifI was just wandering through my memories of Christmas past. When my daughter was a baby, there was no online shopping, in fact there was no internet! My husband and I shopped, and shopped looking for the ideal gift for our 7 month old on her first Christmas.

Everything I looked at would ultimately be for me. As an infant she cared nothing about a cute new outfit. She cared nothing about a new doll or toy. Remembering back now (30 years later) I have no idea what we finally settled on (I'm guessing it was a stuffed animal). But I do remember clearly her reaction. We put her on the floor and she was delighted with all the bright and shiney Christmas decorations around her. I put the shiney red package in front of her and she loved it. No, not the gift inside. She loved the wrapping paper! After helping her open her package, she played only with the wrapping paper.

At first I was a bit disappointed that all my shopping had not impressed her in the least. I know, new moms have strange expectations. After a while I was just glad that I had wrapped her gift in the brightest, shiniest, crinkliest and noisiest paper available.

RS005_Small.gifSince then I have observed babies at Christmas (mine and other peoples) and enjoyed watching them play not only with discarded paper, but boxes and string and stick on bows.

So, what's the point of all this? Go ahead and give your baby something you want. A cute baby outfit, something to decorate the nursery. If they are under a year, they really wont care.. but make sure you wrap it brightly, and use a dozen stick on bows!
